Mike Hursh, Deputy Director for Maintenance Operations at the Valley Transit Authority (VTA) in the San Francisco Bay Area discusses VTA's fleet electrification experience and new initiatives. Although promising, the hydrogen fuel cell technology is not yet ready for the rigorous demand of public transit, according to Mr. Hursh. VTA instead has turned to electric / diesel hybrid buses. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is an independent special district responsible for bus, light rail and paratransit fleets serving cities throughout the county including Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale. Mike joined VTA from San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI), where he began his career as Senior Operations Manager overseeing Track, Signal, and Communications Maintenance, then advanced to Deputy General Manager of Maintenance and finally onto Deputy General Manager for Safety, Security and Training. With more than 20 years experience in the communications, electronics and transit industry, he is responsible for leading his team of bus, light rail, facilities maintenance and support service employees, and actively pursues new and innovative ways to make VTA buses, trains, stations and facilities cleaner, more convenient and more reliable for passengers and employees.
